Winfried Gaul was born in 1928 in Düsseldorf. After the war, he started to study History of Art, Literature and German Language in the University of Cologne in 1949.

In 1950 Gaul he entered the State Academy of Art and Design, Stuttgart. In Paris he knew Jean-Pierre Wilhelm. Wilhelm in 1957 opens in Düsseldorf la Galerie 22. He introduced Gaul in informal paint.

In 1955, its study was a teacher in Dusseldorf Kaiserswerth and it joined to the group of 53 years, a circle of artists of informal, with those who exposed together at home and abroad

Its first exhibition took place in 1956 in the Galerie Gurlitt in Munich.

1965/66 as visitor teacher in the Bath Academy and the Regional School of the Arts in Hull.


1984 was named Minister of Science and Research of Rhineland of the North-Westphalia for the honorary teacher.


In 1994 it was awarded with the Prize Lovis Corinth.


Between 1969 and 1973 it created three monumental sculptures for the University of Heidelberg.


Gaul took part in the Documenta II in 1959, and in 1969 its Farbmarkierungen / the Color Scoreboards were presented in the Documenta.


Wilfried Gaul died in 2003 in Düsseldorf.
