Erwin Bechtold, born in Cologne in 1925. In 1949 he graduated as master printer, in order to continue the family business; but he chose the artistic path. His hometown witnessed the first individual and collective performances of his work in 1950. Then he went to Paris, where he worked with Fernand Léger, and from there, planned a short trip to Barcelona, ​​which became a permanent stay.

The fifties were decisive: a solo exhibition in Barcelona, ​​supported by the Club 49 (underground cultural movement), and Madrid; participation in the II Spanish-American Biennial of Barcelona, ​​and the exhibition Eine neue Richtung der Malerei in (A new way of painting) at the Kunsthalle Mannheim, where he had his first encounter with the German painters of his generation. At this time, his paintings were of high surface concentrations of materials in the center or at the edges.

In 1954 he visited Ibiza for the first time; and in 1958, after a long stay in Berlin, he moved to the island with his wife, Christina, a former estate in San Carlos; without interrupting its relations with Barcelona nor with European art centers. In recent years, the island had become an important center for artists and intellectuals from all over the world. Bechtold initiative, the Ibiza 59 group was created.

In 1965 he produced paintings of organic forms that caused a scandal during his exhibition at the Kunstverein in Cologne. The same pictures, presented in London and Madrid, were exhibited without incident. At this time, he was invited as a lecturer to England; and he participated in international activities SYN group, in addition to the fourth Documenta in Kassel.


In 1979 he created the Monoserie, audiovisual installation, presented at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, ​​later in the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum Ludwigshafen and the Lonja de Palma de Mallorca.


In 1987 he began his painting theme development angle / area / space. Among his most notable work includes integration of the four facades Reiss-Museum and the great reliefs of rusty iron for Daimler Benz in Mannheim, conducted between 1986 and 1990. Since then, his work has been exhibited in museums Athens, Barcelona, ​​Berlin, Budapest, Cologne, Dortmund, Freiburg, Hannover, Heidelberg, Ibiza, Madrid, Mannheim, Moscow, Palma de Mallorca, San Sebastián, Stuttgart, Valencia and Washington. Erwin Bechtold, has several distinctions, among which include: First Prize FAD 1961 Mention Prize Joan Miró in Barcelona 1973, IV Biennial Award Ibiza 1974 Siurell d'Honneur in Palma de Mallorca 1999, 2005 and Premi Illes Pitiuses Illes Balears Ramon Llull Prize 2006. he was elected member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund Berlin in 1962 and the Freie Akademie der Künste Mannheim in 1983.


In 1990, also in Germany, he was granted the honorary title of professor for his outstanding artistic work.
