Erwin Bechtold, born in Cologne in 1925. In 1949 he graduated as master printer, in order to continue the family business; but he chose the artistic path. His hometown witnessed the first individual and collective performances of his work in 1950. Then he went to Paris, where he worked with Fernand Léger, and from there, planned a short trip to Barcelona, which became a permanent stay.

The fifties were decisive: a solo exhibition in Barcelona, supported by the Club 49 (underground cultural movement), and Madrid; participation in the II Spanish-American Biennial of Barcelona, and the exhibition Eine neue Richtung der Malerei in (A new way of painting) at the Kunsthalle Mannheim, where he had his first encounter with the German painters of his generation. At this time, his paintings were of high surface concentrations of materials in the center or at the edges.

In 1954 he visited Ibiza for the first time; and in 1958, after a long stay in Berlin, he moved to the island with his wife, Christina, a former estate in San Carlos; without interrupting its relations with Barcelona nor with European art centers. In recent years, the island had become an important center for artists and intellectuals from all over the world. Bechtold initiative, the Ibiza 59 group was created.
