Fritz Harnest began his studies at the age of 16. From 1921 to 1929 he studied painting in the Fine Arts Academy of Munich as a Carl Johann Becker Gundahl, Ludwig von Herterich and Karl Caspar’s student. In 1930 and 1931 he did study trips to France, Normandy and Paris with his friend, the painter Otto Baumann.

At the beginning of the taking of the Nazi power, he stopped painting. In 1934 he travelled to Berlin where he met up with Emil Nolde, who encouraged him to resume his work. That was followed by a conserved correspondence with Nolde. Fritz Harnest had his first solo exhibition with chalk drawings in Berlin in 1934. From that moment, he lived alternately in Hamburg, Berlin and Munich.

In 1935 Fritz got married with Mutz Ellermann. He worked as an illustrator for many years in order to maintain his family. During this period, he carried out landscapes and portraits. In 1937 the couple moved abroad, where their son Jose was born, a year after the birth of their son Ulf.
