Japanese artist, born in 1919 in Kobe, Kumi Sugaï was very active in France from the principle of the fifties.
Pupil of the School of Fine Arts of Osaka, was formed to the occidental pictorial techniques as well as to the traditional calligraphy. At the same time of numerous artists of its country, in that period, it is installed in France, in 1952. Its work sparks off the interest and he informs the following year to different rooms that they organize themselves as much in Paris as abroad (Foundation Carnegie in Pittsburg, Sao Paulo...).
Its first personal exhibition takes place in Paris in 1954. This event, and the year 1954, exhibitions that organize themselves in the entire world in the ten years that continue are for him the preliminary point of numerous. The style of Sugaï keeps evolving. On its arrival in France its technique approaches the graffiti on fund of canvases almost without color; from 1953, it lays out towards the use of more colors and the abstract written signa appear imposing itself gradually.
Some characters-insects, strange animals, are still present in its work. They disappear from the year 1958, when Sugaï decides to renounce any evocation. He is compared then to Gérard Schneider. Its “big emblematic compositions” are the culmination of its new writing.
In 1960, the art of Sugaï changes brutal mode, taking on the possibilities of a geometrical abstraction. The combinations of forms drawn with the rule and of applied different colors without relief are repeated.
Sugaï dies in 1996.
