Kuhnert studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Heinrich Wild Man from 1957 to 1962. Initially devoted himself to the Abstract Painting, but he began his sculptures, with a
rigorous constructive work in concrete in 1963. Then, from 1964, he made his first reliefs in polyester. Kuhnert was one of the first German artists who used the polyester material. Dealing with
the polyester material influenced his work of the 1960s and 1970s and it soon brought about him a number of public contracts. In the 1980s, he added other materials like steel V2A to his works.
At the same time, he created the series "Stable -Unstable", which were the first works in which Kuhnert worked in the "deconstruction of the engineering."
Horst Kuhnert won the Kingdom of Nepal award in the International Art Exhibition in Kathmandu in 1970.
In 1985, he was awarded with the Prize of the Lower Saxony.
