Erwin Bechtold

Erwin Bechtold was born in Cologne in 1925. In 1949 he graduated as a printer teacher, with the purpose of continuing with the family business; but he chose the artistic way. His hometown was witness of the first individual and collective exhibitions of his work in 1950. Then he went to Paris, where he worked with Fernand Léger and from where he planned a short trip to Barcelona, which became in a permanent stay. The Fifties were the key: an individual exhibition in Barcelona, supported by the 49 Club (clandestine cultural movement), and another one in Madrid; his participation in the II Latin America Biennial in Barcelona, and the Eine neue Richtung in der Malerei exhibition (a new way in the painting) in the Kunsthalle Mannheim, where he had his first meeting with the German painters of his generation. In that moment, his paintings were big area ones, with concentrated materials in the centre or in the borders.  In 1954 he visited Ibiza for the first time; and in 1958, after a long stay in Berlin, he moved to a farm in San Carlos Island with his wife, Christina; without interrupting his connections neither with Barcelona nor with the European art centres.  In these years, the Island had turned into an important centre to artists and intellectuals from all over the world. Bechtold took the initiative to create the Ibiza 59 group. In 1961, he was invited to a Contemporary Spanish Art exhibition that went all over the European capitals for the first time. In 1965, he did paintings of organic forms that caused scandal during their exhibition in the Kunstverein in Cologne. The same paintings were exhibited without incidents in London and Madrid. In this period, he was invited as a teacher to England and he participated in the international activities of the group SYN, apart from the fourth Documenta in Kassel. In 1979, he created the Monoserie, an audiovisual system, showed in the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, later in the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum in Ludwigshafen and in the Palma de Mallorca Market. In 1987 he started to use the development of the theme angle/area/space in his paintings. Among his most-highlighted integration paintings are the four facades of Reiss-Museum and the big reliefs of oxidized iron to the Daimer Benz in Mannheim, developed between 1986 and 1990. From that moment, his work has been exhibited in museums in: Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Cologne, Dortmund, Friburgo, Hannover, Heidelberg, Ibiza, Madrid, Mannheim, Moscow, Palma de Mallorca, San Sebastián, Stuttgart, Valencia and Washington. Erwin Bechtold has different honors among it could be highlighted: FAD 1961 First Prize, Joan Miró award in 1973 in Barcelona, IV Bienal award in Ibiza in 1974, Siurell d´Honor in Palma de Mallorca in 1999, Illes Pitiuses Award in 2005 and Ramón LLul Award in the Balearic Islands in 2006. He was chosen as a member of the Deutscher künstlerbund in Berlin in 1962 and member of the Freie Akademie der künste Mannheim in 1983 too. In 1990 it was attributed to him the honorary title of professor in Germany because of his distinguished artistic work.
